What will Social Studies look like this year?
For the last four years, Iʻve introduced 5th graders to the English language through Social Studies, by purposefully starting the year off, with a lecture series covering the following four topics: 1. Navigation 2. Rise to Literacy 3. Agricultural Feats 4. Hawaiian Governance. This modified lecture series is based off of college level material designed by Kumu Lilikala Kameelehiwa and taught by Kupuna Kalei Laimana, my father.
This series is a base for the whole year and a reason behind the yearly theme, "E ola i ke kuleana." Usually, Kupuna Kalei comes to class, but during this Covid-19 Era studentʻs will be assigned pre-recorded lectures that are interactive. Students will start the year by learning the accomplishments of our kupuna to better understand where they come from. They will use this knowledge to ground themselves, so when we start traveling through out the world to learn of other peoples histories and cultures they are able to critically think and enter into conversations where they start to draw their own conclusions and connections. This content area will be primarily taught in English. Some students will struggle but encourage them to persevere. Students will have an additional teacher, Mrs. Renea Ruark for this section. She will be checking in with students during their distance learning to support students in their English Language introduction acquisition.
